Mine water heat is one of the UK’s greatest clean-energy opportunities. Millions of liters of water in former coal mines are geothermally heated by the earth. This resource can be tapped using heat exchangers and pumps to provide reliable, low-carbon warmth for homes and businesses via local heat networks.

These networks can meet the heating needs of entire communities—cutting bills, reducing emissions, and creating local jobs. Utilizing this resource also honors the legacy of former miners, whose historical efforts now directly heat their grandchildren's homes.

The potential of mine water heat is already proven. Gateshead Council’s network serves a college, the Baltic Arts Centre, offices, and 350 homes. Future expansions will include 270 private homes, a conference center, and a hotel.

Coal Action Network focuses on bridging the knowledge gap for local authorities unaware of this potential.
