Aberpergwm underground coal mine
Aberpergwm is operated by the mining company, Energy Build Ltd, and located in Glyn Neath, South Wales. This is the largest of two operating underground coal mines in the UK (the smaller being Ayle Colliery in Northumberland). Following a planning application to expand and extend mining at Abepergwm, permission was granted in 2018/19 for over 40 million tonnes of coal to be mined up until 31st December 2039. Coal Action Network unsuccessfully challenged the legality of licencing the coal mine in the Court of Appeal after the Welsh and UK Governments blamed each other for permitting an operation so clearly at odds with the UK’s climate commitments.
